The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) cordially invites you to attend a seminar by Dr. Justin Hastings, ARC Future Fellow and Associate Professor in International Relations and Comparitve Politics at the University of Sydney, entitled "Mapping Networks to Improve Emerging Civil Nuclear States' Non-Proliferation Efforts: The Middle East and Southeast Asia," which will be held on Thursday,14 September 2017, at 12:30 in the VCDNP Conference Room. Refreshments will be served at 12:15.
For emerging nuclear States, building a civil nuclear capacity requires establishing networks to trade nuclear materials and equipment, and developing research infrastructure to transfer nuclear knowledge. Yet emerging nuclear States' civil nuclear capabilities often exceed their ability to detect or deal with proliferation challenges. Dr. Hastings will present the preliminary findings of his current research endeavor which seeks to map out the nuclear trade and knowledge networks of countries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia to determine where their challenges in combating proliferation lie, where they should focus their resources, and how they should develop their nuclear knowledge base for the future.
